Beyond Dixon – Old Roots, New Roads

Beyond Dixon is the bluegrass project of bassist Gary Upton, a lifelong musician, instrument builder, and entrepreneur whose passion for acoustic music has led him deeply into the traditions and spirit of bluegrass. Rooted in the rhythm and tone of the upright bass, the project reflects Gary’s belief that great bluegrass is built on feel, connection, and the shared energy of musicians creating together.

Based in the Northeast, Beyond Dixon is grounded by core members Caleb Swan and Maxwell Petersen alongside a growing circle of friends, collaborators, and special guests from across New England and beyond. Over time, the band has welcomed musicians from Boston to Western Connecticut and will continue to evolve through those musical relationships, bringing different personalities, influences, and voices into the fold while staying connected to a strong traditional center.

Much like Upton Bass has become both a respected workshop and a gathering place for bass players around the world, Beyond Dixon is intended to be more than just a fixed lineup. Under Gary’s leadership, the project serves as a creative home for musicians who share a love for bluegrass, acoustic music, and honest collaboration. It is a place where players can contribute, grow, and build something meaningful together through performance, arrangement, and shared musical experience.

Musically, Beyond Dixon blends traditional bluegrass roots with modern arrangements, strong vocal harmonies, and a groove forward approach shaped by Gary’s decades of experience around acoustic instruments and live performance. From hard driving instrumentals to soulful vocal tunes, the band delivers music that honors tradition while remaining fresh, dynamic, and alive in the present moment.

At its heart, Beyond Dixon is about community, craftsmanship, and the timeless pull of acoustic music played from the soul.
